Sweeping views, precipitous rocky slopes, and a large, high-elevation pond attract many visitors to western Maines Tumbledown Mountain. Most visitors choose the Brook Trail, the shortest and least complicated path, but for a far more interesting excursion the Parkers Ridge and Pond Link trails combined provide a slightly longer, less crowded alternative. Although this is a good summer hike, the areas bountiful hardwood trees each autumn illuminate in oranges, yellows, and reds, making September and early October probably the most enjoyable time of year to scale this scenic peak.

The Brook trail is steadily uphill from the beginning, becoming quite steep closer to the pond. Even just in October, it was rather hot during the ascent but be sure to bring a jacket. Once at the exposed rock through the pond, the wind and higher elevation really drop the temperature. You will find large granite boulders that provide wonderful views from the fall foliage as well as Web lake. A perfect spot to stop for any snack before continuing to the summit of Tumbledown or Little Jackson.

About the descent, be sure to pay close focus on the blue blazes that mark the trail. It was not hard to find ourselves climbing down a rock from the trail. When in doubt, follow Tubledown brook right down to the parking area.

Tumbledown is just one of my favorite hikes. Theres almost not a flat just right the whole route which makes for really interesting terrain. The views alone allow it to be well worth the effort. I am getting excited about tackling the tougher Loop trail during an upcoming visit.
